Device Drivers 2
Modems
The "Key"
to finding the Driver
for any Card is ---
the Main (or Largest) Chip on the Card
(Modem Card, Sound Card, Video Card whatever).
In very rare cases (maybe 5%)
the main info is on
the Second Largest Chip
(the smaller of the two Main Chips).
On all (Main) chips there are
"IDentifying NUMBERS"
these numbers are the essense
(or heart) by which
these Chips are identified.
What does all this mean --
Chip Numbers
"point to"
Drivers
(Software)
NOT
the
NAME
of the
Manufacturer of the Card !!!
(in almost all cases)
Unless of course the Card Manufacturer
also makes the chips (which is rare)
So the the chip maker
almost always
creates the
core
software to run
the main chip which is the brain,
heart and soul of the Device.
Below are examples of these chips
and the ID Numbers on them.

OK -- this first picture allows you to see and compare the overall look of this Modem (Device).
When you click on it you can see the relationship (in terms of size) between the two chips.
Remember
--- a
Device Driver
is a software program that tells a PC how to
talk to
(interface with) a particular
device
(Modem, Sound Card, Video Card etc...) that you plug into your PC.

This is the "Main Chip"
(Primary Chip or Big Chip)
In
most cases
this is
where the most important Information
(ID Numbers)
that will lead to finding your
Device Driver will be found.
The above picture is of the Secondary (Smaller or Little Chip)
on many Devices this Chip can be ignored
In some cases there
might not even
be
a Secondary Chip --- But in this case the Secondary Chip
may
turn out to be
More Important
than the Primary Chip.

CLICK on each PICTURE

You can CLICK on most
UNDERLINED
words
and they will Open something !!
(VERY IMPORTANT !!!)
Also Run your Mouse over every PICTURE
and HOLD IT THERE (for a second or two)
and a
MESSAGE will come up with
MORE INFORMATION
about that particular Component shown !!
If the
INFORMATION
goes away before you finish reading it
simply remove your mouse and put it back on the
OBJECT
(picture, animation or whatever) and it will come BACK again !!
